Breaking Ground, Building Community: Our Latest Affordable Housing Project

Finding affordable housing continues to be a challenge, not only in Kitchener-Waterloo but across Canada. At KW Habilitation, we recognized years ago that we had the ability—and responsibility—to be part of the solution. With over 50 years of experience in housing and land available to build, in 2018, we opened our first affordable housing building. That first project welcomed tenants from the Region of Waterloo’s affordable housing waitlist, including people we work for, here at KW Habilitation.

This launched our Neighbour Helping Neighbour model of affordable housing! Our approach goes beyond bricks and mortar; it fosters a community where people look out for each other, say hello, and check in—creating a true sense of belonging and really working to bring our vision statement, a community where everyone belongs and participates, to life.

Now, we are excited to share that we have broken ground on our second affordable housing project! This new building, set to welcome residents in early 2026, continues our commitment to creating inclusive and supportive housing for people in need.

This initiative is possible thanks to support from several partners. In June 2024, the City of Kitchener announced a $10,000-per-unit grant to help build more than 500 new not-for-profit affordable housing units across the city. This funding assists with early project costs and supports developments that provide not-for-profit supportive, affordable rental, or co-op housing units. It is a key part of Kitchener’s Housing for All vision and is made possible through the Federal Government’s Housing Accelerator Fund initiative. KW Habilitation will receive $180,000 for this project from the City of Kitchener.

Previously, the site housed an aging group home that was in need of extensive repairs and renovations. After careful consideration, we determined that designing and constructing an 18-unit, one and two-bedroom affordable housing building was a better long-term investment. This new development allows us to support more people in our community while creating a modern, inclusive living space that aligns with our Neighbour Helping Neighbour model.

It is important to note that this apartment building is not just for people supported by KW Habilitation but will be available to those in need from our broader community. KW Habilitation will use less than half of the units, with the remaining apartments designated for individuals and families who qualify for affordable housing through the Region of Waterloo’s waitlist.

With every step forward, we reinforce our belief that affordable housing is more than just a place to live—it’s about building a stronger, more connected community. As we watch the walls go up and the spaces take shape, we know that this building will become a home for many, a place where neighbours support one another, and where everyone has a place to belong.
