Progress Continues at 115 University Avenue East
Exciting progress is underway at 115 University Avenue East as construction continues to move forward and new life returns to this important community space.
While renovations are ongoing, the site is already active in meaningful ways. Weekly market pickups and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) pickups are bringing people together and improving access to fresh, local food. At the same time, the urban garden is thriving, continuing its legacy as a place of growth, connection, and hands-on learning.
These early activities offer a glimpse of what’s to come.
Building Toward a Vibrant Community Space
Construction at 115 University is progressing well, and we’re excited about the opportunities the renovated space will offer. The vision centers on creating a flexible, inclusive environment that supports a wide range of community needs.
Planned features include:
- Teaching space for skill-building and group learning
- A learning kitchen to support cooking programs, nutrition education, and shared meals
- A calming room, designed as a sensory-friendly space similar to a Snoezelen room
These additions will allow the building to support diverse programming and provide welcoming spaces for people with varying needs and experiences.
There is also strong potential to collaborate with community partners, creating opportunities to host programming that extends the impact of the space even further.
A Vision Taking Shape
As shared in our previous article, A Community Place for Everyone, 115 University Avenue has played an important role in supporting people for many years. The building has been home to day supports, horticulture activities, and social opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Its gardens and flexible indoor spaces helped create opportunities for connection, routine, and meaningful participation.
Significant upgrades are now underway to improve accessibility, functionality, and comfort throughout the building. With the roof and windows already completed and interior work progressing, the space is being thoughtfully updated to better support a wider range of uses. While the building itself is not expanding, the redesigned interior will allow for more flexible programming and greater community use.
Once complete, 115 University will support a wide range of opportunities, including:
- Senior drop-in programs
- Expanded supports for adults with complex needs
- Horticulture and therapeutic programming
- On-site training and skill development
- Community events and gatherings
Help Us Complete the Vision
Thanks to a generous family donation and partial funding from the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, we have made strong progress. However, additional support is still needed to bring the full vision to life.
