On Friday, March 1st, 2024, KW Habilitation proudly hosted the Grand Finale of KW Hab’s Got Talent. This talent show happens every year and has become a fun tradition in our community. It’s a chance for people to show off their talents and have a friendly competition.
The first talent show started in 2002 and was called TC Idol, inspired by American Idol. Bob Willacy and Beth Willson hosted it, and it quickly became a favorite event in our community. Even though the Training Centre closed in 2014, TC Idol kept going. In 2021, someone we work for asked if we could start it again. So, we did a virtual version called Stay at Home Idol due to COVID-19.
In 2024, we changed the name to KW Hab’s Got Talent. Every Friday in February, people from Inclusive Living, Complex Care, and Community Supports joined on Zoom to compete. They sang, danced, and showed off their skills.
Every week, people voted for their favorite contestants. The top contestants from each week got to perform in person on Friday, March 1st at the Victoria Hills Community Centre for the Grand Finale. This year, we had David Thiessen performing Welcome to the Jungle by Guns n’ Roses, Kevin Watson singing the Climb by Hannah Montana, Richard Klatecki singing Love Me Tender by Elvis Presley and Patrick Willson and Clive Heath singing Poker Face by Lady Gaga. Each participant gave it their all and put on a great performance.
The winner of this year’s KW Hab’s Got Talent was David Thiessen who sang Welcome to the Jungle by Guns n’ Roses and stole the show.
KW Hab’s Got Talent Grand Finale was more than just a talent show. It showed how creative and strong our community is. We’re thankful for everyone who supported us – our community, volunteers, and sponsors. We can’t wait to continue the tradition and hope to do more in-person shows in the future. Here’s to many more years of celebrating talent, diversity, and the spirit of KW Habilitation.
