Creating Plain‑Language Social Stories to Support Kindness and Belonging

When a real problem exists but the right resources do not, KW Habilitation believes the solution starts by working alongside the people most impacted. That belief led to the creation of a new set of plain‑language social stories designed to help the people we support understand racism, learn the importance of kindness and belonging.

Staff shared that they had faced moments where someone supported might say something racist or hurtful to staff, peers, or members of the community. These situations are not okay, and they can be difficult to address in ways that are clear, respectful, and accessible. When the team from our diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility working group (the IDEA Collective) searched for existing tools, they couldn’t find exactly what they were looking for. The tools they found to be written in plain language seemed to be directed to a younger audience. Instead of accepting that gap, Manager of Inclusive Living, Rachel Hunter, and a member of the IDEA Collective worked with people with lived experience to create five social stories that explain racism in simple language, celebrate differences, and reinforce that everyone deserves respect. Each story includes reflection questions to support discussion and continued learning, along with a facilitation guide and activities that help reaffirm and extend the messages over time.

Early feedback from teams has been encouraging. Staff shared that the stories provided a great starting point for thoughtful and sometimes challenging conversations, helping them feel more confident having meaningful conversations even when discussions moved beyond the story itself. The reflection questions have been especially helpful for summarizing key ideas and clarifying expectations around kindness and respect moving forward.

This work was recently highlighted at the Inclusion Symposium hosted by Empower Simcoe and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Community of Practice, where Rachel shared the project through a video presentation. Rachel, who is also a member of the Community of Practice, spoke about the importance of creating accessible tools that support everyday learning, not just moments of correction. By co‑designing solutions and teaching kindness in clear, inclusive ways, KW Habilitation continues to support people to navigate their experiences with understanding, confidence, and dignity.
