We are deeply saddened by the passing of David Fisher on September 11, 2025, in his 91st year. David’s name is woven into the very history of KW Habilitation. His vision, determination, and generosity were instrumental in shaping the supports that continue to make a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities today.
From the earliest days, David was a driving force. Alongside the Kinsmen Club, he helped raise the funds that launched what would become KW Habilitation. He often recalled walking door to door selling paper “bricks” to raise money, and the remarkable trust of friends who signed a $50,000 guarantee loan that allowed the first building project to begin. These bold steps, taken at a time when government funding was almost nonexistent, laid the foundation for services and supports that have now spanned decades.
David’s leadership and commitment helped bring to life the New Dawn School, early learning programs, and later, inclusive living supports. His name lives on in the David Fisher Residence, a reminder of the difference one person’s determination can make for future generations.
Beyond his accomplishments, David will be remembered as a man of vision, effort, and heart, someone who believed in inclusion, opportunity, and community. His story is also the story of KW Habilitation: people coming together, taking risks, and imagining something better.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to David’s wife, Carol, their children Lyle, Linda, Cindy, Michael, his grandchildren Tori, Luc, Travis, LIam, Carson, Lauren, Julia, Shayna,, and his great-grandchildren Jolene and Parker.
We are forever grateful for David’s vision and leadership, and we honour his lasting legacy.
