Finding Her Place: Darien’s Path to Meaningful Work at The Hangout

Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of people with disabilities in workplaces across Canada. This year, we’re proud to share the story of Darien, whose journey from a co-op placement to a valued employee at The Hangout at Grant’s Café shows what’s possible when people are supported to reach their goals.

Finding Her Place

Darien began her employment journey as a co-op student through St. Louis Adult Learning and Continuing Education Centre. With support from KW Habilitation’s KW Career Compass program and a job coach, she found her way to The Hangout, a café operated by KW Hab that brings people together through good food, friendly conversation, and community connection.

“It was April Fools’ Day when the cafe first opened. At first, I thought they were joking. But it worked out. I got my co-op hours done and loved it.”

After volunteering a few extra weeks to help keep the café running, Darien was offered a part-time position. “I didn’t expect it, but I really enjoy being here.”

Cooking Up Confidence

In the café kitchen, Darien discovered new skills and a growing sense of independence. From preparing food to serving customers, she quickly found her rhythm and built confidence in her abilities.

“I can cook, I can bake—I can do both! I never practiced baking before, but now I’m good at it. Everyone loves my cinnamon rolls and cheddar bay biscuits.”

Darien has also shared creative ideas to help improve the café, suggesting schedule changes and new events. “Sometimes it’s busy, sometimes it’s slow,” she explains. “I like figuring out how to make it better.”

Growing as a Team Member

Beyond her culinary talents, Darien has become a key part of The Hangout’s welcoming atmosphere. She’s learned to manage rushes, greet customers warmly, and handle challenges with patience and humour.

“I used to be nervous, now I talk to everyone—even across the hall! I’ve learned to stay calm when it’s busy and just do my best.”

Her energy has made a real impact. “Darien brings life back into this space,” says Stacey Mitchell, Manager of Community and Employment Supports at KW Habilitation. “Her smile and humour make everyone feel welcome.”

Pride in Her Progress

When asked what she’s most proud of, Darien doesn’t hesitate. “I’m proud of myself,” she says. “My family comes to visit—my mom, my grandparents—and that makes me happy. It feels good to know I’m doing well.”

She’s looking forward to continuing her career at the café and exploring new opportunities. “I want to keep working part time, just keep growing and learning.”

Building Inclusive Opportunities

Darien’s story is a reminder that meaningful employment is about more than just a job. It’s about community, confidence, and connection. Through inclusive hiring and support from KW Career Compass, Darien has found a workplace where her skills shine and her personality lights up the room.

As we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we recognize the value of inclusive employment and the difference it makes in people’s lives. With the right opportunities and support, everyone can thrive—just like Darien.
